Welcome to
"Cookie's Canine Kids" Memorial Fund
This page was
inspired by an Australian Shepherd named Cookie that tragically
lost her life in an act of hate. Cookie was intentionally
poisoned October 24, 2000 and died in the arms of those that
loved her. But it is not this act of hatred that made Cookie
special but rather the spirit that resided inside of her.
She was a special
companion that had the power to lead and inspire
those that lived with her. Cookie taught humans
in her short life. Now she taught the normal
canine lessons of devotion, forgiveness, and
unconditional love but she also taught some
special lessons as well. Cookie, you see,
inspired and taught her humans that there was a
need for them to step forward and rescue the
lost, abandoned and abused canines of this world.
In ways that only canines can do, she inspired
her couple to open their arms to those canines
that were less fortunate. Cookie's couple learned
to open their hearts and arms to dogs on death
row in shelters, dogs along the side of the road
and fellow canines who unfortunately had been
purchased only to live with someone who didn't
care much about living with a companion.
First Cookie and her
couple took in Sam, a rescue Border Collie. Then
the four of them began to rescue Australian
Shepherds through organizations such as
Second Time Around Aussie Rescue, Inc. , Aussie Rescue Placement
Helpline and
South Texas Aussie
Rescue
and to rescue Border Collies through
Border Collie Rescue Texas, Inc. They started with a dog or two but
then something special happened along the way.
Cookie and her couple shared the inspiration with
other canines and humans. What started small
became much larger as the idea grew and spread to
other families. One became two, two became four,
and then four became more and more canines saved
and humans inspired to join in rescuing. This is
the true legacy of Cookie. One small Aussie life,
lived in such a way that today scores of humans
are rescuing hundreds of canines each day and the
numbers are growing.
Cookie has gone now. But
in her leaving she has started from her small
heart a blazing fire of desire in our hearts and
in the hearts across this land to rescue the
abandoned and abused canines of this world. This,
her fund, and those that choose to contribute and
join are a testament to the power of rescue. One
today. Two tomorrow. And in the years to come
hundreds and thousands.
The funds that come into "Cookie's
Canine Kids" are in memory of those rescues
that have come our way that could not be saved
and in the memory of those , like Cookie, that
have inspired us. These resources are set aside
from the normal budget of our rescue group to be
used for Australian Shepherds and Border Collies
that are in need of special medical treatment.
They will be used to allow the lame to walk, let
the sick be healed, and the blind see again.
These funds will supplement normal rescues
resources so that more can be reached and the
special ones will always find a place. They will
also be used with a memory of Cookie and others
that have come our way and made us better because
they lived with us.
